Wanjiku Gichigi
Mechanical Designer

I was born in Kenya and moved to the U.S. at the age of 8. Although the prospects of this new country were exciting to me, during this stage in my life I was primarily concerned with adapting to my new environment. It wasn’t until my freshman or sophomore year of high school that I was first introduced to engineering as I enrolled in a drafting course. Prior to this class, I had no clue what career path I was headed in like most of my peers. This drafting course opened my possibilities and finally gave me something that I was passionate about.

I quickly took up courses in welding, advanced drafting and as I entered my time at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, I continued my interest in design through my projects ranging from mechanical design work to fluid dynamics research to energy resourcing. What drew me to mechanical engineering specifically was the ability to be skilled in a wide range of talents because a lot of the fundamental lessons we learn can be applied to almost anything. Having this under my belt has allowed me to grow as an engineer/ designer because it has given me the capacity to learn from different fields and people with varying expertise. I am excited to continue my work in design and building sustainability at Meyers and am eager to learn from this multifaceted team!

Did you know?

Part of my interest in mechanical engineering is the hands-on aspect. To be able to put your ideas to reality is by far one of the proudest things someone can accomplish. During my time at Cal Poly, I worked as a theater technician assistant where I helped weld stage equipment, repaired and assembled lighting fixtures, and ran the flywheel during performances. In this role, I was able to fulfil my interest in welding and theater/film which I hope to continue outside of work.
