SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HARVEY MILK TERMINAL 1 EXPANSION AND MODERNIZATION

The project is the expansion and modernization of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport. The renovated terminal revolutionizes the guest experience with a state-of-the-art ticketing lobby and checkpoint, spacious waiting areas filled with natural light, a selection of favorite Bay Area restaurants and shops, and dozens of custom works of art.

The project is targeting LEED Gold and Fitwel certification.

The project delivery method was contractor Design–Build. Core trade M & E subcontractors were brought on board at the end of schematic design. MEYERS+ services included the Stakeholder Engagement Process during the programming phase, development of the Basis of Implementation and peer reviews in subsequent design and construction administration phases.

MEYERS+ provided mechanical, electrical and energy modeling and sustainability services.

ENGINEERING FEATURES

The building was designed to contribute to SFO’s goal for a net-zero carbon campus, including a 1.53 MW solar PV array, integration with heat recovery central plant, displacement ventilation, radiant heating + cooling, low-energy lighting design, highly efficiency thermal envelope, and extensive use of electrochromic glazing to mitigate solar heat gains and glare while maximize use of natural lighting.

Systems design includes many features that will reduce energy use, including: individual carriage system (ICS) baggage handling systems in lieu of traditional conveyor based systems; electric vehicle (EV) ground service vehicles; use of regenerative elevators and go-slow escalators.

The modernized Terminal 1 is estimated to save 47% annual energy cost as measured against ASHRAE 90.1.
